Before launching your search for a good deal on a used or pre-owned car or truck, spend some time considering your options and doing your homework. What are some tips to prevent getting a lemon? What are some basic guidelines when looking for a used vehicle?
1. Before purchasing a pre-owned vehicle, what are some basic tips to follow?
Inspect the “clean” car in the daylight and in good weather. Don’t expect perfection , but make safety a major priority and road test before your commit to buy. Have a trusted mechanic thoroughly inspect the car. Consider how you will use the car, size, style, features, etc. and remember to investigate and compare prices.
2. What about warranties and the term “as is”?
The FTC Used Car Rule states that all commercial sellers are required to place a sticker in the window called a “Buyer’s Guide”, which tells whether the vehicle comes with a warranty, and, if so, which systems are covered, how long, and what percent dealer will pay. Note that if a car is being sold “as is” , once you drive it off the lot, the dealer has no further responsibility. Be sure to get a signed copy of the Buyer’s Guide.
