The extended drought in southeast Texas over the past two years, combined with the soil conditions of the region, is playing havoc with home foundations.  Companies who specialize in foundation repairs stay swamped with requests.  What should you do?

1. What are some tips for a consumer who is in need of foundation repair?

Make sure that you and the contractor understand exactly what workis to be done -- put it down in writing -- be specific -- if they won’t it should be a warning that the company may not stand behind its word . . .

Compare prices by getting at least three cost quotes -- beware of “low-ball” bidders . . .

Don’t rush into signing a contract -- Don’t sign blank contracts.  Get a copy of everything you sign . . .

Don’t pay for work that has not been done -- don’t sign a completion certificate until the work is complete and you’re satisfied.

2.  What about recommendations and references?

Start with the BBB -- get a business review and ratings on the companies you are considering . . . call (409) 835-5348 or (855)BBB-SETX  24 hours a day and/or www.bbb.org.

Call references of satisfied customers before signing a contract -- if company is unwilling to give references, they may have something to hide . . .

Beware! . .. sometimes “references” turn out to be people paid to say good things . . . If possible, look at examples of the contractors work -- check out work in progress and jobs already completed.
